That Face

When all is finished,
when the struggle is over,
I want to carry one face in mind
through that dark bodyless forest.
I want this face to be one light,
guiding onward toward the ultimate.
I want this face to be one I have seen
a million and ten times over.
One I’ve kissed and touched,
wiped tears from with my own hands.
One whose mouth made shapes
in my head time and time again.
I want that one face with me
crossing over, the long walk
through a nighttime garden.
The face of one I’ve seen
sigh and laugh and snicker.
I want it so clear in my vision
as I walk fog-headed and weak.
I want the face I knew in youth,
here, on life’s sordid soil.
I want that face with me forever,
the second piece of the puzzle
in my child’s eye, if only.
May I carry it everywhere,
even as I follow the sun
around circles of the earth
forever.
