The Indulgent Mood
And How to Escape It
Over the past several years, I have thought a lot about the various habits that I have. Most of them are pretty harmless while some are more questionable. I don’t think I’m on a path toward destruction, but I still think I could enhance my life by getting away from some of these things.
General media like movies, music, visual art, and books are all fine enough so long as it doesn’t tempt. I like it clean. Swearing is acceptable because I think I know better than to swear in my own conversations.
Social media poses one threat to me as a free-thinking entity. I heard one person liken social media to gambling. You post something hoping a lot of people will like or comment. Most of the time it is a disappointment, but for a minute there you believe it might get a big response. I eventually escaped this failed logic by proving to myself that even great quality posts hardly win a noticeable response.
Granted, some social media communities are better than others. For example, yours truly, is a great platform, a great community even. Quality is rewarded. I read articles here that are just plain good, interesting, personal. I enjoy that it is give and take, mostly fair, and that the corner of obscenities is easy enough to avoid. Basically, if you consider Medium a social media platform, it is the best one…
