The horror genre is alive and well. It has a long history: from books of the early Victorian Period known as “Gothic fiction” to the objectively terrifying comics and films of the 1980s to today’s online fandom, wikis, and variations like the psychological thriller. And, there continues to be ever-newer innovations to the age-old tradition of scaring the crap out of people.

That said, I would like to introduce four primary examples of classic horror novels.

These novels stand for something larger than first observance would show. They are a commentary on the times in which they were created. They are grand metaphors hidden deep within the story of something so unusual, so forbidden that you cannot take your eyes off the page. Without further ado, I give you my top four classic horror novels.

Frankenstein — Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley was truly a tortured soul. She wrote this book as part of a contest between friends. They wondered, Who can write the best horror story? Clearly, all these years later, the verdict is out, and none other than Mary Shelley has won.
