Beyond Mere Daylight
A Poem by Sam Grackle
What am I
beyond limitation
beyond constraints
of time, money —
beyond obligation?
And death.
Quick with a word
to your laughter,
Creative, the infinity within
pours out as so many shapes,
Loyal, she said years back
when I could not
look away
turn away,
Ready like a teenager
to go anywhere,
Content, in
simplicity.
I am struck hard
with life’s grandeur
among other things.
In this poem, I try to imagine a perfect world where life never ends. What would that be like? Who would I be? What parts of me would be the same? I believe my personality would be distilled down to only the most deeply rooted parts. My personality would be pure of conflict since all conflict arises from the ephemeral nature of life on earth.
Yet if life were infinite, certain aspects would be the same. A personality would still have unique traits. The journey of forever would change everyone into beautiful and happy souls. In this poem, I tried to describe, in short phrases, the parts of me that are essential.
Thank you for reading.
